Counselling Services
New London College recognises that, from time
to time, personal and emotional difficulties can affect your ability
to concentrate and study effectively and to perform to your full potential.
That is why we have a counselling service.
The Service offers individual and group counselling
on a short or long term basis, depending on needs and availability.
In addition, a wide programme of workshops and events are organised
throughout the academic year.
What is Counselling?
Counselling
offers you the opportunity to discuss feelings and thoughts on matters
of concern with a trained professional. Counselling is not about giving
advice and a counsellor will not judge in any way. Rather, a counsellor
offers a space to explore your feelings and works with you to enable
you to develop resources and skills to manage difficulties more effectively.
The College counselling service is confidential. Information about
you will not be disclosed to anyone else without your prior knowledge.
Why Do Students Come For Counselling?
Students
come for counseling for a variety of reasons: an inability to study,
poor concentration, learning or writing blocks, panic attacks, isolation,
suicidal feelings, bereavement, relationship and family problems, or
depression and anxiety. The counsellors are happy to talk to you about
anything that is bothering you, whether it is related to your academic
or personal life. While we recognise that it may be difficult to ask
for help, we positively encourage you to contact us.
Making An Appointment
The
counselling service is open throughout the year. Request for counselling
can be made by telephone or by dropping into the college admin office.
You will be asked to fill in a form and you will normally be written
to within a week. Letters will be sent to your term address unless
you specify otherwise.
Demand for counselling within the College may be high and sometimes you may
have to wait to see a counsellor. However, we deal with urgent requests as
quickly as possible. We try not to keep students waiting for an appointment
any longer than absolutely necessary but waiting times vary at different times
of the year according to demand.
Seeing a Counsellor
Appointments
with a counsellor are normally 30 minutes long and during your first
meeting the counsellor will work out with you the best way we can help.
We find some students want one session to discuss a particular problem
whereas others want to see a counsellor over a longer period. We will
work with you to identify the time scale and frequency of sessions.
Workshops and Events
Throughout
the academic year, the service organises workshops and events on issues
of concern to students. These include Orientation Programmes for International
Students, Leaving College and Stress Management amongst others. Information
about forthcoming workshops is advertised on notice boards
