IMIS Diploma

Course Code: NIMIS2

Awarding Body: IMIS

The Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS) is an international professional association devoted to supporting and promoting the profession of information systems management.

Introduction

Information Technology is a field of almost limitless career opportunities, yet the most satisfactory and fulfilling careers are those that have been well planned. IMIS is a UK Accrediting Body that runs its own Examination Syllabus leading towards the IMIS qualification, which is recognised and respected in the field of information systems management around the world.

The Diploma leads to IMIS Licentiate Grade. It continues on from the Foundation Diploma level although access at this level is also available to candidates who comply with the entrance requirements. Completion of the examinations awards a Diploma Certificate and the general standard equates to the National (ONC) Certificate.

Course Aims

The IMIS qualification is structured to provide recognition for all levels of achievement. Combined with the IMIS Syllabus and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme, it is designed to support information systems professionals throughout their careers.

The aim of the Diploma is to provide students with:

  • Management of IS: An understanding of business organisations in terms of types and structures, and the information systems needed to enable those business organisations to operate successfully within their environment.
  • Development of IS: The knowledge to enable them to engage in the processes of development, implementation and operation of technology based information systems.
  • Development of IS/Technological Support for IS: An understanding of the technologies and tools that may be used to support those information systems and their development.
  • People Issues: Recognition of the need for professional standards together with the knowledge of legal issues and social responsibilities required in their work as Information Systems professionals. Appropriate transferable skills.

Course Market

There is an increasing need for a new kind of highly computer literate business professional who can take responsibility for developing many day to day business applications using spreadsheets, databases and other rapid application development packages. They also need to be able to help specify new and secure systems, to be able to work confidently with their IT colleagues on a larger scale project, and to understand the business potential for networking and the Internet.

The course is aimed principally at providing a professional qualification for the following markets:

  • young people who want to work with computers and need some entry level education
  • employees wishing to develop their professional skills in information systems.
  • students wishing to achieve a Degree in a flexible and modular basis, at their own convenience and timescale.
  • international students aiming to achieve a world class professional qualification in information system.

Course Structure

All modules defined within the course structure may be taken individually or collectively to form a Diploma. Each module is designed to introduce the student to the basic elements of information systems practices. The syllabus is based on four themes, which are developed within and across the levels. Concepts, principles, methods and ideas may be introduced at one level and be expanded in a conceptually more demanding next level. Modules may be based predominantly on one theme but of necessity topics will be integrated.

All Six papers must be passed.
